At ChasingBetter247 (CB247), we’re proud to be a CrossFit affiliate, offering world-class CrossFit training as part of our diverse fitness offerings here in Perth. If you’re curious about CrossFit but unsure what to expect in a class, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or brand new to functional training, here are a few things to know before stepping into your first CrossFit session at our Malaga club.
What Is CrossFit?
According to the official website, CrossFit was founded over 20 years ago to “train multiple disciplines simultaneously, combining elements of gymnastics, weightlifting, and cardio into a single, cohesive approach. Our vision was to go beyond traditional fitness methods, focusing on holistic development across strength, endurance, agility, and more—building well-rounded, capable athletes for life’s challenges.”
CrossFit has become a global powerhouse of community fitness and offers something for everybody! In a typical one-hour CrossFit class, participants complete modified versions of the same workout together, with our expert coaches guiding you through step-by-step.
What Are the Benefits of CrossFit?
CrossFit offers a range of benefits, making it one of the most effective training styles available:
Improved Strength & Conditioning: Workouts target full-body strength while building endurance.
Scalability: Every workout can be modified to suit your fitness level and abilities.
Community & Support: CrossFit fosters an environment where everyone supports and motivates each other.
Increased Motivation: The dynamic nature of CrossFit keeps workouts engaging and challenging.
Do You Have to Be Fit to Start CrossFit?
Absolutely not! One of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit is that you need to be in peak physical condition to start. At ChasingBetter247, our CrossFit classes cater to all fitness levels. Whether you're a beginner or an elite athlete, workouts can be scaled to your capabilities. All you need is a willingness to learn and work hard, and our coaches will support you along the way.
What Is a CrossFit Class Like?
Each CrossFit class at CB247 follows a structured format to ensure you get the most out of your workout while staying safe:
Welcome & Warm-up: The class coach will welcome you and lead the group in a dynamic warm-up to prepare your body for movement and prevent injuries. If you’re a newbie, feel free to arrive a few minutes early to chat with the coach about what to expect in the day’s class.
Skill/Strength Work: Focus on a particular skill or strength-building exercise, such as Olympic lifting or gymnastics movements. If that already sounds foreign, don’t worry! CrossFit is a community sport with a diverse range of participants and every exercise can be adjusted to a beginner level. Your coaches and classmates will be there to guide you and cheer you on!
Workout of the Day (WOD): The WOD is the main part of the class, consisting of a high-intensity circuit incorporating various functional movements. There’s a good chance you’ll see others in the class tackling the WOD at expert (Rx), intermediate and beginner levels. You don’t need to compare or compete with them! Just learn the techniques at your pace and push yourself as best you can… and then come back tomorrow and push a little harder! As we like to say here at ChasingBetter247, it’s “you vs you”!
Cool-down & Mobility: To wrap up the class, our coach will guide you in a cool-down and stretching session to aid recovery and improve flexibility. Expect a high-five or a fist bump from every class member - it’s a team event!
Do I Need Special Gear for CrossFit?
CrossFitters love talking about gear! However, the essential items are similar to any group fitness class at the gym. You’ll need comfortable workout clothes, some water, and a good pair of shoes that provide stability for lifting and flexibility for dynamic movements.
Here are some other (optional) items you will comezacross when mingling with your CrossFit classmates:
Wrist Wraps: Provide extra support for your wrists during movements like overhead presses and snatches.
Weightlifting Belt: Helps support your lower back during heavy lifts.
Knee Sleeves: Offer support and warmth to the knee joints during squats and lunges.
Chalk or Grips: Help improve grip strength for bar work, like pull-ups and deadlifts.
What Do All These CrossFit Words Mean?
If you're new to CrossFit, you might come across some unique terms and abbreviations that can be a little confusing at first. Here are some common terms that will be helpful know:

AMRAP (As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible) – A workout format where you complete as many rounds or reps as possible within a set time.
